Increasing atomization and fashioning of ever new categories, to come across something like Vivek’s paintings, where the lines between dreams and reality blur, is to encounter a mystery. Mystery in the sense, that his work, happen rather than painted. And in this, there is poetry. It is said if there is no mystery, there is no poetry. Living in such banal reality, only hope one can have is in this sense of poetry and mystery. Vivek ventures in this mysterious territory. A fascination for water pervades all his work, whether it’s the floating sensation of a child in the umbilical fluid, or the objects floating in water. The slow movements are also akin to the dream-state. This world of water, slow movements, and a kind of fluidity of dreams are present here also. Vivek Tembe was born in 1951, Shivpuri. Educated in 1973: National Diploma in Fine Arts, Gwalior; 1977: National Diploma in Sculpture, Gwalior. His solo exhibitions include 1977: Bhopal; 1995: LKA, Delhi; 1998: Art Indus, Delhi; 2000: Son et Limiere, Mumbai; 2004: Show with Sculptor wife at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; 2005: Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal. He had collectively shown in 1972: Calcutta; 1977, 80: Gwalior; 1980, 86: Bombay; 1982, 83, 85, 94, 95, 96: Delhi; 1986-91: Mumbai; 1994: “Tattooed Spaces”, LKA, Delhi; 1998: Forms Within Forms, Sun Art Gallery, Bhopal; 1998: Art Indus, Delhi; 2001: “ANADI”, Birla Academy, Kolkata; 2001: ”ANADI”, Chitrakala Parishad, Bangalore; 2001: ”ANADI”, NGMA, Mumbai; 2006: Together we are, Jahangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. Vivek participated in 1973, 74, 76, 77-78: All India Kalidas Exhibition, Ujjain; Several National Exhibition LKA, Delhi; 1999: IInd All India Art Biennial of Rajasthan, Jaipur; 2000: ” Millennium Mask” Dhoomimal Art Centre, Delhi; 2000: “Juxtapose”, an Exhibition of Art work by Artist Couples, Mumbai; 2006: Alliance Francaise de Mumbai; 2006: Contemporary Indian Art at Damascus, Syria. He has been awarded 1975: State Award, Bhopal; 1973, 74, 76: All India Kalidas Exhibition, Ujjain; 1976, 77: All India Exhibition, MKKP, Raipur; 1976-78: National Scholarship under eminent Painter & Scholar, J. Swaminathan, Delhi; 1981: Raza Award, Bhopal among various others. He has attended distinguished Camps. His works are in many prestigious collections like LKA, Delhi; Garhi Studio, Delhi; MP Kala Parishad, Bhopal; Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal; Sanskriti Pratishthan, New Delhl; Akademi of Administration, Mussoorie; Museum of Modern Art, Madras; Artlndus, Delhi; Vadera Art Gallery, Delhi and in various Private Collections.
